Dominus Aeris, Coelus 4

In the June sale, Auction Antiques had the pleasure of handling a vibrant and exciting painting by Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra (b.1976 and 1979). Signed, dated 2015 and named Dominus Aeris, Coelus 4 on the rear, this painting is one of a renowned collection of Dominus Aeris Coleus paintings by the duo, all painted in oil on a circular iron dome. The sequence of paintings all feature otherworldly hues of pale pinks and blues, and are juxtaposed by the highly detailed, mysterious and somewhat uncanny scenes.  This particular composition features a wooden ship appearing to be suspended in stasis, but somehow floating, creating a intensely thought-provoking image.

Working together, Indian artists Thukral and Tagra have created some extraordinary paintings, installations and sculptures and this exquisite oil painting is no exception. At an impressive 91cm width and height, this piece is surely a conversation starter in any environment, and for this reason this curious and delightful painting ended up selling for £2000 (hammer) at auction.
